To-date there is only one direct flight connection between the US and the Canary Islands by United. The route between Newark and Tenerife is served on a three times weekly basis with a Boing 757-200. Prolonging these services into the winter season shows there is sufficient demand out of the New York area. The Boeing 757 is narrow-body, single aisle jet with a range just sufficient for this route. It can carry 176 passengers, so a weekly capacity of 528 passengers. The CanAm Jumbo Jets have a weekly capacity of 800 passengers on this route on the planned bi-weekly schedule plus 84t of cargo, which the B757 cannot provide on this long flight.
Other than this one no other direct connections are being offered between the Canary Islands and the United States and Canada. Within Europe there are several charter airlines flying tourists from the North-east to the Canary Islands, all of which are also using narrow-body aircraft.
Other competing Airlines such as Iberia, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, TAP, amongst others, serve US/Canada destinations via their Hubs in Madrid, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Lisbon. These flights require a stop-over, mostly turning into a lay-over due to misalignment of the flight schedules;
-thus 2 days of travel each way; -which CanAm will shorten significantly!
This is a crucial detail for US-American visitors, normally having only 2 weeks of vacation per year. So gaining one day of vacation coming and one day returning will make the trip much more attractive. This effect will be enhanced by CanAm flights departuring late in the evenings from the United States destinations and returning around noon-time wherever possible.
